India Rebuffs Bangladesh Accusations of Cross-Border Threats
Bangladesh authorities on Sunday called in India's diplomatic envoy to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, expressing alarm over what they characterized as former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ongoing "incendiary" rhetoric emanating from Indian territory.
The Indian Foreign Ministry issued a statement Sunday dismissing the charges while reaffirming its stance on Bangladesh's political future.
"We have consistently reiterated our position in favor of free, fair, inclusive, and credible elections being held in Bangladesh in a peaceful atmosphere," the ministry declared.
New Delhi emphasized that Indian territory has never been permitted for use in operations harmful to the people of Bangladesh.
Dhaka simultaneously renewed extradition requests for Hasina and ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both wanted to serve sentences handed down by Bangladeshi courts.
A Bangladeshi tribunal convicted both officials and imposed capital punishment in a crimes against humanity prosecution, determining they orchestrated brutal suppression of student demonstrations in 2024.
Hasina, who escaped to India following the upheaval, told media in a recent interview that the judgment was a "foregone conclusion."
Nobel Peace Prize recipient Mohammad Yunus currently leads Bangladesh's interim administration.
Elections are scheduled for 2026 in Bangladesh. Hasina's Awami League, which governed for 15 consecutive years prior to the revolt, faces a participation ban.
