Putin Aims to Deepen Economic Ties with China, India

(MENAFN) Moscow aims to expand its economic connections with its major trade allies, China and India, President Vladimir Putin declared at the Russia Calling! Investment Forum on Tuesday.

Both Beijing and New Delhi have declined to participate in the Western sanctions imposed on Moscow over the Ukraine conflict. Instead, they have increased trade activities with Russia. The Russian leader commended their “rational and pragmatic” stance.

Putin also emphasized the “many years of friendship and strategic partnership” shared with China and India, noting that trade volumes with both nations have “significantly grown” during the past three years.

“We are aiming at taking cooperation with the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of India to a whole new level, including through enhancing its technological aspect,” he stated.

Trade between Russia and China nearly doubled from 2020 to 2024, exceeding $240 billion last year. In a recent statement, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov noted that the two countries have moved away from Western currencies in their bilateral transactions, with most payments now executed in rubles and yuan.

In a further step to strengthen ties, Moscow and Beijing released a joint roadmap last month outlining plans for cooperation across various sectors, including agriculture, commerce, environmental issues, as well as investment in AI and space exploration.
