Train collision kills seven wild Asian elephants in India

(MENAFN) Seven wild Asian elephants, including young calves, were killed when a high-speed express train struck a herd crossing the tracks in Assam, north-eastern India, local authorities reported.

Another calf sustained injuries in the early Saturday incident in Hojai district.

The Northeast Frontier Railway said the train driver spotted dozens of elephants and applied emergency brakes, but several animals were still hit. Five carriages of the Delhi-bound train derailed, though no passengers or staff were injured. Authorities reported train cancellations and diversions in the area throughout the day.

Veterinarians examined the deceased elephants before they were buried. Assam, home to nearly 6,000 elephants, sees frequent crossings by wild herds, but officials noted that Saturday’s collision occurred outside a designated elephant corridor.
