Trump warns India of possible tariff increase over Russian oil
“They do trade. And we can raise tariffs on them very quickly, and it would be very bad for them,” Trump said aboard Air Force One.
The warning follows comments from Senator Lindsey Graham, who credited US pressure for India significantly reducing its Russian oil imports. Graham, promoting legislation to sanction countries trading with Russia, said he discussed the matter with India’s ambassador last month, noting New Delhi’s interest in easing tariffs.
India, the world’s third-largest oil consumer, became a major buyer of Russian crude after the 2022 Ukraine conflict, with Russia supplying over 36% of its imports, according to analytics firm Kpler. Some Indian refiners have paused new orders and sought alternatives in response to US sanctions.
