India Cracks Down on AI Content on Social Media

(MENAFN) India has dramatically tightened its grip on artificial intelligence-generated content across social media platforms, slashing the mandatory removal window for flagged deepfakes and manipulated material from 36 hours to just three — a sweeping regulatory overhaul set to reshape how platforms operate in the world's most populous democracy.

The landmark changes, rooted in amendments to the Information Technology – Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code – Rules, 2021, take effect Feb. 20, public broadcaster a radio station reported.

Under the revised framework, platforms are required to display visible labels on AI-generated content "in a manner that ensures prominent visibility in the visual display that is easily noticeable and adequately perceivable..." according to the amended rules. Authorities and court-ordered takedown requests must be acted upon within three hours of receipt.

Beyond government-directed removals, intermediaries face an even tighter clock for user complaints — mandated to "take all reasonable and practicable measures to remove or disable access to such content which is hosted, stored, published or transmitted by it" within two hours of an individual filing a grievance.

The regulations arrive as India commands extraordinary digital influence. According to Statista, the country boasted the world's largest Facebook audience as of last October, exceeding 403 million users, alongside the largest YouTube viewership globally — making enforcement at scale both critical and complex.

The Indian government told parliament this month that the policies are intended to ensure an "open, safe, trusted, and accountable internet for its users, including women and children."

"The government is committed to ensure that the internet in India is free from any form of unlawful content or information, particularly which may lead to violence against women and exploitation of minors," the Ministry of Electronics and IT said.

In a separate but strategically aligned development, Indian conglomerate Adani Group on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious plan to invest $100 billion in renewable-energy-powered, hyperscale AI-ready data centers by 2035. The initiative is designed to establish a "sovereign energy and compute platform designed to position India as a global leader in the emerging Intelligence Revolution," the group said in a statement.

The dual announcements coincide with India's hosting of the five-day AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, drawing delegates from more than 30 countries.
