India Says Dialogue with Iran Key to Reopening Strait of Hormuz
His remarks followed suggestions by U.S. President Donald Trump that nations such as China and Japan should deploy naval forces to protect maritime traffic from potential Iranian attacks.
In an interview published recently, Jaishankar highlighted prior negotiations between New Delhi and Tehran, which allowed two Indian-flagged gas tankers to safely traverse the strait, as evidence that dialogue can yield tangible results. “I am at the moment engaged in talking to them and my talking has yielded some results,” he said. “This is ongoing. If it is yielding results for me, I would naturally continue to look at it.”
Jaishankar clarified that there is no “blanket arrangement” for Indian ships with Iran, noting that “every ship movement is an individual happening.”
He stressed the importance of reasoned diplomacy: “Certainly, from India’s perspective, it is better that we reason and we coordinate and we get a solution than we don’t. So if that sort of allows other people to engage, I think the world is better off for it.”
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime chokepoint, handles a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas shipments. Tehran’s ambassador to New Delhi recently confirmed that Indian vessels would continue to have access, citing the countries’ longstanding ties.
As part of India’s diplomatic efforts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, and Jaishankar has engaged with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, four times since late February, when U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran prompted retaliatory strikes from Tehran.
