India Raises Concern Over Incident Involving Ships in Strait of Hormuz
According to reports, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a meeting in New Delhi on Saturday with Iran’s ambassador, Mohammad Fathali, during which he communicated India’s “deep concern” regarding the incident. The episode involved ships carrying energy supplies that were reportedly stopped from passing through the strategic waterway by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
This marks the first reported case of India-bound energy shipments being obstructed in the Strait since a ceasefire was announced on April 8. Earlier, on April 17, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that the passage of all commercial shipping through the Strait remains fully open.
“The Foreign Secretary conveyed India’s deep concern at the shooting incident earlier today involving two Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz,” the Indian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
During the meeting, Misri also highlighted that Iran had previously assisted in ensuring safe transit for multiple vessels. He further “urged the ambassador to convey India’s views to the authorities in Iran and resume at the earliest the process of facilitating India-bound ships across the Strait.”
Officials clarified that the Iranian envoy was “called in” rather than “summoned,” contrary to some media interpretations.
Separately, Misri represented India in a virtual international meeting hosted by the United Kingdom and France on April 17. The session included 44 countries and focused on the importance of maintaining uninterrupted maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
